For the record, I am not a gun owner.  Recently, though, I have thought more and more about being a gun owner.  With the threats from our government about "gun control," I again am worried that more and more of our rights will be taken away.  This is serious, it is our second amendment right and it was added to the Bill of Rights as part of the Constitution for a reason.  I do believe, the biggest reason is because the  founders of this country worried that the government could bully its citizens if they didn't have this right.  And as history points out, this is true of other countries.  It isn't the lack of this right that protects people, but the institution of it.  And when the government steps in to control guns, what does that really mean anyway?

The only way to control guns is to well, there really isn't a honest to goodness way to do it. Sure, we can say that we will screen people more, or that we will restrict the sales of automatic assault weapons, but to be honest, we will only be controlling the guns that law abiding citizens are purchasing. There will always be people who do not follow the laws. This is why they are called "criminals."  Do we really want the only guns to be in their hands?

And  what is this about some journalist in New York leaking a gun permit owner map?  Like these people, who are legal gun owners, are criminals like those on the sexual predator list and need to be publicly  known, as if people are safer knowing who those dangerous gun owners are? (Note the sarcastic tone of that sentence)

Sure, we have had some majorly devastating things happen in our society because someone decided to use a gun or guns in a way that was violent and atrocious, but this does not mean the gun is at fault.  Guns do not kill people; people kill people.

I believe that a different approach is needed to prevent these atrocities from continuing in our society.  The first step is to deal with mental illness.  We have become so touchy and politically correct, that there are people living among us, who years ago would have been deemed "mentally insane" and would not have been able to live among us.  Sure, this may seem cruel to some, but really, there are dangerous people with serious mental issues who are not getting the help they need because we have decided that their rights are taken from them, if we put them in a mental hospital.  But we really do need to realize that there are some people that cannot function safely in our society.

Also, we need better education.  We must be vigilant in recognizing and reporting warning signs in people.  Many of these people, who walk into public and shoot up the joint, have demonstrated mental flags in the past that people either didn't recognize or they just didn't think it were a big deal.  Yes, due process is important, but at what point do we finally say, strike three, you lost your right to live among us and you need counseling and drug therapy help?

Sure, not all gun owners are safe, law abiding gun holders, but in the case like many key topic issues, we should not punish the majority(who are law abiding and safe) because of the irresponsible minority.

So, what type of gun should I buy, if I were to buy a gun?

The type of gun you should buy depends on the reason for buying. Hunting, self defense, sport, or to collect. Personally, I have a rife that I use just for target practice, but could also be used for hunting. I also have a semiautomatic handgun that I use for target shooting and home defense. The key is knowledge and training. If you bring a gun into the home bring it in safely. Get training, lock it up, and practice practice practice.
